After more than 160,000 years, the sediment in the lake has reached 100 meters deep. Since water in the Maar lake is well protected by basalt rocks around, sediments in the lake would record clearly the change of climate and plants on earth. Therefore, the Maar Lake is called as the living "Natural Year Book" of climate and environment. From the sediment, people can study the change and thriving of mankind and plants on earth, providing scientific information for further development.

Because of this, the lake has attracted more and more scientists from at home and abroad for investigation. Thes include the famous geological scientists in China such as Yuan Baoyin, Han Jiamao, Xiao Jule, Luo Xiangjun, Wang Wenyuan and Chu Guoqiang as well as Professor J.F.W. Negendank from the Geoscience Center of Germany. With more science investigations, scientific value of the Maar lake has attracted world wide attention. Huguangyan National Scenic Spot has been listed as China Natural Science Fund 【49772173】,National Nine-five-year-plan project【49894172】and International Scientific Research Project for Euro-Asia Maar lake.
